    Glossary

    Local SEO terms, explained simply.

No jargon. Plain-English definitions for every term you'll hear when working on local search.

    Local SEO
The process of optimizing your online presence so your business appears prominently when people nearby search for your products or services on Google. It includes optimizing your Google Business Profile, building local citations, earning reviews, and getting links from locally relevant websites.
    Map Pack (Local Pack)
The block of 3 local business results that appear at the top of Google's search results, accompanied by a map. Appearing in the Map Pack is one of the highest-value goals in local SEO because these listings receive the most clicks for location-based searches.
    Google Business Profile (GBP)
A free tool from Google that lets you manage how your business appears on Google Search and Maps. Your GBP listing shows your name, address, phone number, hours, photos, and customer reviews. A fully optimized GBP is one of the strongest local ranking signals.
    NAP Consistency
NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number. NAP consistency means your business information is identical across every online directory, website, and platform. Inconsistent NAP data confuses Google and can suppress your local rankings.
    Citation
Any online mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP). Citations appear on business directories like Yelp, Yellow Pages, Apple Maps, and hundreds of niche directories. High-quality, consistent citations signal trust and authority to Google.
    Local Authority Backlinks
Links to your website from trusted, locally-relevant sources like city news sites, local blogs, chambers of commerce, and industry directories. These links tell Google your business is a recognized authority in your area, directly improving your Map Pack rankings.
    Core Web Vitals
A set of Google metrics that measure the real-world user experience of your website: Largest Contentful Paint (loading speed), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness), and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability). Poor Core Web Vitals can hurt your local search rankings.
    Review Velocity
The rate at which your business earns new reviews over time. Google values recent reviews — a steady flow of new 5-star reviews signals an active, trusted business. A sudden burst followed by silence is less valuable than a consistent pace of 2–4 new reviews per month.
    FAQ

    Common questions about local SEO.

Answers to the questions we hear most from local business owners.

What is the most important thing I can do for local SEO?

Fully optimize your Google Business Profile. It's the single highest-impact action for local rankings. Make sure your category, description, photos, hours, and services are complete and accurate. Then focus on getting consistent 5-star reviews from real customers.

How long does it take to rank in the Google Map Pack?

Most businesses in moderately competitive markets see meaningful improvement within 60–90 days and Map Pack rankings within 3–6 months of consistent effort. Highly competitive markets like lawyers or dentists in major cities can take 6–12 months.

Do I need a website to rank locally?

No, but having one significantly improves your chances. Your Google Business Profile alone can earn Map Pack rankings, but a well-optimized website with local keywords, fast load speeds, and service pages gives Google much stronger signals and helps convert visitors into calls.

What are citations and why do they matter?

Citations are online mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on directories like Yelp, Apple Maps, and Yellow Pages. When your information is consistent across 50+ directories, Google trusts your business data more and ranks you higher in local results.

How many Google reviews do I need to rank in the Map Pack?

There is no magic number, but businesses in the Map Pack typically have significantly more reviews than those on page 2. In most local markets, having 25–50 recent reviews with a 4.5+ star rating puts you in a strong competitive position. Review recency matters as much as volume.

What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?

Regular SEO targets national or global search results and focuses heavily on content and backlinks. Local SEO targets searches in a specific geographic area and adds signals like Google Business Profile optimization, NAP citations, proximity, and local reviews to the mix. Local SEO is faster to show results for service-area businesses.
