We measured Austin, and the review bar here is higher than New York
Austin is the one market on this site where we can stop generalizing. Our 2026 study of 1,122 Google Business Profiles included 283 profiles in the Austin metro, measured on 9 August 2026, which means the numbers below are what we actually found here rather than a national average applied to a local page.
The headline finding was not what we expected. The median Austin business carried 317 reviews against 119 in New York, 171 in Chicago and 69 in Waco. A mid-size market set the highest bar in the study by a wide margin, and it held in every industry we measured. The most plausible explanation is density: New York searchers have dozens of qualifying businesses within a mile, so proximity dominates and smaller operators surface. Austin sprawls, fewer businesses cover far more ground, and the ones that dominate have accumulated very large review counts.
The practical consequence is that Austin businesses are routinely told they are close to competing when they are not. The median across every profile in the study was 151 reviews, so a national figure understates the Austin bar by a factor of 2.1 — and for HVAC, where the Austin median was 732, by a factor of nearly five.
What ranking in Austin actually requires, by trade
These are median review counts from the profiles we measured in each market. Read your own trade rather than the overall figure, because the spread between trades in Austin is wider than the spread between metros.
HVAC is the extreme case. The median Austin HVAC business in our sample carried 732 reviews against 61 in New York — a twelvefold difference in the same trade. Cooling demand in central Texas runs hard enough for long enough that the established operators have had years of high job volume to convert into reviews, and a new entrant is not closing that gap in a quarter.
Electrical is the opposite. At a median of 85 reviews it is the most reachable trade in the Austin sample, and the absolute number needed to compete is small enough that a deliberate review habit can close it inside a year. If you are in a low-median trade here, the bar is genuinely low and worth attacking directly.
